I've been listening to hardcore for about 30 years now so I guess I'm one of the old geezers.
With that being said, I would not listen to any Youth Crew HC band anymore and the new Madball album does not kick my ass as the Set It Off album did in the 90s, I lean more towards metallic sound today. Fortunately with the abundance of different styles of hardcore today and the much better sound quality of the production of records it is easy to find something I enjoy at any given moment. I especially like metallic hardcore, with double bass and stuff. These days you can basically listen to metal, but it's played by hardcore dudes with regular clothes and hair :-D I do like classic heavy metal as well, such as the first few Anthrax and Iron Maiden and Metallica albums. I know that's entry level, so any hints appreciated. There actually was a phase when I listened to that stuff religiously.
You’re absolutely right about the varieties of hardcore out there. Sometimes I try to get into some of them when it’s hardcore dudes doing death metal, an increasingly popular trend with bands like Spinebreaker, Black Breath, Gatecreeper, and a bunch more. But in the end I often don’t get into those bands so well, with the exception of Black Breath. The first two Anthrax albums are golden. Glad you mentioned Anthrax. I have a few threads for different types of metal in the music discussions section anytime you want to explore specific death/Thrash/traditional/doom metal bands you may not have heard of. I haven’t been updating those as much because I don’t think people on here really like metal as much as most other styles on this site. Since you mentioned Maiden, have you heard the album by Ancient Empire called “The Tower”? They’re influenced by Maiden and I just love this album. Band is 3 years old, already 3 albums which all are great, The Tower being my favorite. Dude keep those recommendations coming, regardless of what you think others may like. Regardless of genre goes it is always great to find new bands that can kick ass . Also, the album "Blackout" by Affiance is worth checking out imo. Band is considered more metalcore, but they largely sing with cleans and kick ass with the guitars. And Ancient Empire definitely falls into the bucket of damn good metal bands for sure!

Nice suggestion on Affiance. Been a long ass time since I got down to some metalcore, probably the last time was when I was listening to Red I Flight’s album, “The Years.” But I could totally back Affiance. I watched that music video for “Fire” and I dug it. Too bad Adrianne has broken up. But they’ve got a bit of music for me to check out. Cool suggestion~

I'm not entirely sure I've posted in this thread yet, but I'm 40. I don't look or act like any run of the mill 40 year old though, as stfubaker can totally attest too!
