New American Experience film from PBS, a really good one! It's from a different angle than the legendary Woodstock documentary, as it's centered on the collective experience of the average fan and Boomer who attended 50 years ago. Really well done. letterboxd.com/v9733xa/film/the-way-home/Super sweet and simple movie about a boy adjusting to living with his mute grandmother. Nothing showy or complicated, just warm and affecting. letterboxd.com/v9733xa/film/the-way-home/

Went to an indie theater with my dad to see this in 70mm last night. Really fun; Brad Pitt is great in this and the last 20 minutes or so were a riot. 9/10

There's a reason why this is getting savage brutal reviews, that's because it's tone-deaf and confusing and profoundly uninteresting. This is easily the most disappointing movie of the year for me. Not the worst by any means (i skip a lot of those), but one that seemed so promising but instead is just a dumb mess. letterboxd.com/v9733xa/film/the-kitchen-2019/

Absolutely excellent. A rousing documentary and now elegy for a legend who passed away earlier this week. I had to take the drive to see it today. Warm and comprehensive portrait of the woman who wrote a couple of the greatest works of the last thirty years of the 20th Century. letterboxd.com/v9733xa/film/toni-morrison-the-pieces-i-am/

This is a revered French comedy but i didn't care for it. It's not funny, frankly, and Chaplin already did it better 25 years before. Oh well. That'll be the last Tati movie i see. letterboxd.com/v9733xa/film/mon-oncle/

From the director of Hero and House of Flying Daggers, which I loved. The story is simple, the visuals are stunning and Gong Li is fantastic. 4.5/5 From the Taiwanese master, Edward Yang. The film jumps between multiple narratives which are all somehow connected. Bit of mental exercise and I probably need a rewatch to fully comprehend it. 4.5/5 A wild ride. I appreciated it a lot more when I understood that it had a feminist message behind it. 4/5 Fun, stylish action scenes but the plot was confusing and ultimately pointless. 3.5/5

Just came back from seeing “The Farewell”; a touching, poignant dramedy that I enjoyed. I’m currently wrangling my thoughts together and when I do I’ll hit up Letterboxd with a review.

So Francis Ford Coppola has overseen a new restoration and cut of his masterpiece, Apocalypse Now, which has just been released on the 40th anniversary of the film. I went to a special screening of it last night which also included a documentary about the set photographer, shown before the film, and an interview between Steven Soderbergh and Coppola, shown afterwards. I was sat in the same seat in the cinema for five hours in total, which is a new record for me. I'd previously seen both the original theatrical cut and the Redux version. This new cut is definitely my favourite, and should, I think, be viewed as the definitive edition. It feels like more of a surrealist art film than the theatrical cut, which is what Coppola originally intended, and is tighter and paced better than the Redux version, which he admits was rushed. The restoration looked and sounded immaculate. I also enjoyed the extra material at the screening, which really gave me a greater appreciation for the context of the film and the director's vision. This is probably somewhere in my top 10 films of all time, so an obvious 5/5. I'd definitely recommend seeing this version on the big screen, whether you've seen the film before or not.

Nothing too special. Just a good over the top action film. Lots of cool stunts and fight scenes. Only thing I had a problem with is during the climax of the film, which takes place over 30 minutes, it's a bit before dawn at the beginning and within 9 minutes, it's complete daylight. Oh and then there's also a random thunderstorm.

Went to a screening of David Lynch's debut feature. Quite an experience seeing it on the big screen. 4/5 Bong Joon-ho has been a little hit and miss for me but this was brilliant. Tense, funny, brutal and thoughtful, all in equal measure. I enjoyed this in the way I think other people enjoy Jordan Peele movies. 4.5/5 Film of the year so far for me. I loved Tarantino's take on 60s Hollywood, and the two lead characters were a lot of fun. A pleasant surprise because I didn't really enjoy Django Unchained or The Hateful Eight. Excuse me while I drive a vintage car around Los Santos for a while. 4.5/5

Really enjoyed this cinema verite doc about beach life in a Palermo town, amidst economic and social changes in Southern Europe. A skillfully filmed slice of life. letterboxd.com/v9733xa/film/happy-winter/
