Thanks for the support guys! My son is now on his 4th day, and has been home with us since yesterday late afternoon. He’s a good one so far, quiet except for when he’s ready to feed. He looks different every day. Both my mom and me wife’s mom made the comment today that he is better looking every day. Hahaha
I’ve been in a fairly unhealthy headspace about it since yesterday though, and I’m trying hard to work out of it. My wife’s mom is a bit of a control freak and prefers to do things herself than to ask or tell someone else to do something. This means that I felt mostly like an observer rather than a father for much of the time so far. Yesterday it got me really upset because I realized I’ve become more of a cameraman than an insider in the situation, and it feels backwards. Also, in China it is common to hire an aid who stays with the family for 1-2 months to help with taking care of the child and the mother, allowing the mother to rest and heal better, and also teaching the new parents things about taking care of a baby. This further escalates the growing feeling of uninvolvement that I have right now. Today I’m just going to try to push my way in and try not to harbor these complicated feelings. That’s my son, and I should not have to feel like I’m on the outside looking in.
It is is especially important for me to get time in because I’ll go alone to the US on July 9th to visit my mother and bring back necessities. I’ll be gone for almost 3 full weeks, so I will miss a bit of these early times with the boy. If things continue to get worse, I’m going to have to talk to my mother in law and ask her to step back a bit, which I am trying to avoid because I currently live in her home as we await our new apartment to be finished. That’s a long way from now.
Sorry, I didn’t mean to dump a load of negativity. It’s trulu a special time and experience for me right now. I am enjoying what times I do get in with him. We just had the talk about circumcision...I’m sorry, little buddy...

Does anyone else find it a true experience that quite often album covers provide way more levels of depth and interest than the music on the album? It occurs a lot to me.
And the funniest part is I still regularly fall for this trick and assume something is gonna be good when I see the artwork. Lol

Lol I think it’s because it gives you an initial insight into the band’s sense of style and taste. It works both ways, so if a band has shitty artwork, I usually assume their music is going to be shitty too.

On Tuesday I’m flying out of Shanghai to go back to the US for 3 weeks. Will be in Phoenix for the first two days, definitely going to hit up my favorite brewery, Arizona Wilderness Brewing for as many of their solid IPAs as I can possibly stomach. Then I’m heading home to Arkansas to stay with my mom for 2.5 weeks and just chill and eat a lot.
It’s going to be very weird landing in the Seattle Airport, and later the Phoenix Airport after having lived in China for the year. Already the transition back to US life was always odd after just two-four weeks staying in Shanghai, but this time it was a year. And I also drove a few times in Shanghai. All of these experiences will probably further enhance the extreme feeling of general slowness that I always feel when I finally land in the US again. It’s like, the airport is so much more quiet than anywhere I am in Shanghai, and people walk way slower. And the driving is so civilized in the States, and it’s so unstable feeling in Shanghai. I’m afraid when my mom asks me to drive us home from the airport that I’m going to default to Shanghai driving mode, which would get us killed because Chinese drivers always drive with extremely quick reflexes as they tend to turn in front of oncoming traffic way more dangerously.
But yeah, it’s gonna be a nice relaxing time coming up. I hope I can sleep on the plane, because I get very restless on long flights like that...
