+ It's Heritage Day weekend in Canada, so my wife is home for the long weekend - I wasn't able to go rafting because my buddy took my Foreman and I can't be on a boat with that goof for 4 hours. My fat ass got confused and thought you were talking about a George Foreman grill.

+ Practiced violin for 4 hours today. Managed to nearly memorize the last movement of my Ysaye Sonata #4. +/- Typhoon is coming, so I took a chance and went out for a lovely walk this evening. Got rained on during the way back, but oh well. If I didn’t go out today, I probably wouldn’t have gotten a chance for several days as the storm looks to be lasting for the next several days. +/- These days are uneventful. This day was another of that. On the bright side, I can get on TDM a lot...I probably logged in today 49 times. - Jetlag is real. I have been back in Shanghai for a little over a week now and it’s still killing me. + My son is 46 days old today. Super healthy and fun. - Still lacking initiative to do any actual prep work for the school year, which begins on the 22nd of the month.
Wow...boring!

+/- I only practiced two hours violin today. Played through Bach’s Partita #1 and worked more on my Ysaye Sonata #4. I think I’ll make a video of my Ysaye eventually just to give myself a concrete reason to practice it continuously. + Typhoon ended in Shanghai this morning, so I was able to get out of the apartment and walk around. Got an Americano with ice cream in it at Hey Tea. Really decent. + Found a source of endless and excellent videos on YouTube showing music education workshops which are helping me to craft better lesson plans as of today for my general music classes. + Reached out and chatted with my old best friend from 5th grade. He’s a massive AFI fan and just went to his 44th AFI show. Crazy dedication right there. + Was able to hold my son and calm him consistently all day (admittedly, I have struggled to find a way to calm him by holding, probably because I’m not a soft body like my wife, her mom, or the aid lol). + Lunch was great. A steamed Chinese fish which was tricky only because of how many bones were scattered through its flesh, but I’ve become very fond of eating steamed whole fish since my wife’s mom cooks it often. +++ The chatbox is gone!
- Wife was moody/bitchy during first half of the day, although she later admitted it was because her milk was getting stuck and it made her breasts hurt, making her irritable.

I can play all of it, but some of it is still quite challenging and not playable at performance tempo without intonation issues yet. But it’s a really cool piece. Here’s a competition winner playing it. He’s a better violinist for sure. His interpretation is more soft than mine, but he plays it really well.

Wow, that was beautiful. i loved how the tone, colors and timbre of the piece were wonderfully evocative and how the flow was exquisite. Now I'd love to hear your interpretation once you feel ready for it. Is that Ysaye piece specifically for the violin, or is it written for a full orchestra/string quartet?

It is one of 6 solo violin sonatas Eugene Ysaye wrote, and only for violin. I am obsessed with those 6 sonatas and I have a personal goal to learn all 6, which is less commonly done that you’d think. Usually people just learn Sonata #2 and then they’re done. I’ve learned #1 and 2, and am working through the 4th. I’m skipping 3 because it’s not one I’m particularly interested in. #5 is beautiful but it scares me with how hard it is. And #6 is all technique. Really hard.

One more post before I get on the plane in Philly. (Yes, Delaware is the only state in the country without commercial airfare. Take that one to your next trivia night.) I'm ready for my hot girl summer to begin! Byyeeeeee.

- Spent parts of five days with a one-year-old in Myrtle Beach... and we never got to the beach. First day it was 100 degrees and they were jet-lagged. Then it rained Thursday. And it rained Friday. And it rained Saturday. Leaving for home in twelve hours.
