When I was younger it was all about hardcore dancing. I remember practicing my two step and being on the edge of the pit every show I went to. Being on the edge of the pit always has a sense of danger, you've got to keep your eyes open. But being on the edge I've got to say that a lot of people at hardcore shows are assholes. Seen way too many tough guy dudes jump up and crowd kill every song. The majority of people I see on the edge of pits are the girls that go to shows too. A lot of the venues are pretty small, which means, the pit takes up like 75% of the space. Leaving people who do not want to be involved few options to not get hit.
Honestly, I hope it ends up being one of those things that may erode over time. Seen way too many shows/sets stopped to break up a fight, seen way to many people get their glasses or nose broken, and far too many people who use it as an excuse to be violent towards random people. The few times I've had a civilized pit it has been super enjoyable and another aspect of the show to enjoy. But the amount of times that has happened is few and far between.

I've seen one or two broken limbs. That was enough to put me off. Doesn't surprise me that there's the odd fatality too.

Again this is making me sound old but I don't really fully understand the crowd killing thing... like, 10 years ago it seemed like it was fine to kinda run/jump/smash into people on the edge of the crowd which IMO is absolutely fine and pretty harmless, but now you have people actually smashing and beating on people in the cwod. Eh.

It depends on the band/music as well. If I'm going to see Arkangel, Six ft Ditch, Bulldoze or something alike, I'm waiting for high tension and lots of madness. But at a Turnstile show, I'd love the moshpit to be friendly fun. All hardcore dancing, but far from the same. I totally get you man, completely different kinds of hardcore dancing, but for me they're both way more interesting than like a circle pit or push mosh

I miss these days so badly. Moshing with my buddies was probably one of the highlights of my life, so much fun, so many injuries, wouldnt trade it for anything. Although I am a "beer in hand, stand next to the soundboard type of guy" now, I still wish I could get out there and throw at least one more spin kick before I hang up my dancing shoes forever. I have made a promise to myself that I will 100% come out of mosh retirement and completely destroy my body if only a handful of bands come back for a single show - Throwdown or Black My Heart.
Side note: I broke my nose when Suffokate opened with Slaughter Your Enemies back in 2010 by one of my buddies who kicked me in the face during that opening two step. Good times indeed.

I gathered a few thoughts I have gathered about reading this thread and reflecting on my own opinions and they all stem back to the same basic principle "don't be a fucking douchebag". Read the venue, if you're at a hardcore show and the people want to dance that's the way the pit is going to go, same thing if you're at a metal show and everyone wants to push pit. Just accept it and don't try to change that.
Personally I've moshed in every style I can imagine, people say they don't enjoy it and don't participate and I just don't understand that mindset. The energy and adrenaline is something just intoxicating, I don't drink at shows just to keep that feeling alive.
I don't do hardcore shows anymore, I don't listen to as much of it as I once did. And I don't enjoy the scene as much as I did in my early 20's. Personally I don't enjoy the hardcore dancing, I've done plenty of it, I just don't want to get punched in the face or kicked in the ribs anymore. Give me a good ol fashioned push pit everyday.
I will never intentionally crowd surf, I've seen way too many people dropped onto fucking concrete just because they were unlucky or got dropped. Plus I'm 6'1" 210, no one wants to carry my dad bod around.
I don't often get into the pit anymore, like someone else said you can always find me around the edge of it. When I was 16 I could spend an entire show in the pits, well I've aged 16 years and smoked too many cigarettes in that time to maintain that. Edge of the pit is the perfect place to be to get the energy, plus there's usually a few songs that compel me to jump in.
Also crowd killing is not moshing, it's not dancing. It's fucking assault.

Your post made me smile. Totally agree man. Great times. I almost broke my friend's nose because someone swung his entire body against me at the end of the pit during Knuckledust (LBUUUUUUU) and I almost choked another friend at First Blood because I threw my arm around him right before we got jumped on by a stagediver. We still laugh about it regularly and it must've been 8 years ago. Pit stories.
