It's time for the eighth entry in the Marsh Film Club. This one was selected by me, v9733xa .
I've set a viewing deadline of 28 October, so make sure you watch it before then and please don't post any thoughts/spoilers until after that date.
Feel free to use this thread to talk generally in the meantime - let us know if you're taking part, any difficulties tracking down the film, or just to say you've watched it.
I will post some discussion points for everyone before the deadline.

I've searched high and low over the internet for this one and I'm coming up short. The DVD is discontinued in the UK and there's only a European import which I can't play as my laptop is broken so I don't think I'm gonna be able to take part this month. Sorry v9733xa |

I assumed such an acclaimed masterwork, heralded as one of the greatest avant-garde achievements in film, would be available somewhere. Maybe i took a little too hard of a left turn here. |

No problem at all, man. I think the keyword here was “avant-garde”, ergo, more people would be leery of uploading it to sites as opposed to your regular run of the mill blockbuster. Just checked my library system and they don’t even have it. Just leaving to go home now, so I’ll check the .rars later on this evening. |

Trying to watch a near-5 hour film with a newborn baby in the house is gonna be tough. |

Ok, so it seems the .rars on uloz.to are actually the film itself, separated into 5 parts. Downloaded pt.1 and ran it thru Unarchiver and unrarx; both programs had an issue with it, but I think that’s only because it comes out as an .avi, soooooooo......
I gotta run it through a video converter to change it to MP4.

I lost access to the internet on my TV at the weekend so the chances of me watching this before the deadline are now non-existent.
If we do get anymore Film Choices in the future then my preference would be under 3 hours please

Just wanted to pop in and say that school has been kicking my butt for the past two weeks, so currently I'll be unable to watch this. HOWEVER (!!!!), my bro and I just purchased a new Apple TV to replace the older one we had (tl;dr is it crashed and it costs just as much to fix/replace as it does to buy a new one) and he added the Criterion Channel to it. Haven't created a profile for it, but when I do I get a week free trial, so I'll watch this as soon as I do.

Again, sorry for ruining Film Club. I'll post my review tomorrow, regardless. Here are the topics and questions to consider, please. 1) Many consider this as the shining example of Mekas' documenting his "displaced person" status in an artistic way. What themes do you feel address this?
2) "I guess by now you know that I do not like any suspense." Mekas says this in the fourth reel. Is the odd meta nature of this film a positive or negative for you?
3) Some consider the film too sentimental. Do you? Why or why not?
4) Mekas uses intertitles and text cards in most of his films. Are you a fan?
5) How do you feel about the music in the film?
6) Finally, is the film too long? |
