The new Dust Bolt is booming! Had to go check YouTube on this since I actually never heard this band before. From YouTube comments it seems that they are evolving their sound a bit with this new one. I listened to a couple of tracks from the new one. Didn’t like the “Another Day in Hell” track since it really didn’t capture the Bay Area Thrash sound that they had previously been known for (did some review reading on Metalarchives) and I kinda don’t like ballads on thrash albums. However, the other track was solid. I’ll be looking out for this one. And I’ll have to grab the previous album.

Hexecutor: Gotta share my favorite thrash metal discovery. I posted them in the “post a band and comment on band.........” thread (name of thread not exact...whatever) but these guys need to have their own post in the thrash metal thread. This is intense, riff-heavy thrash that often goes forward at breakneck speed. Their riffs are really innovative at times, and at others it’s like they stole a page from Slayer’s Reign In Blood album, which isn’t a bad thing at all. Check these French badasses out. Gotta help them get more listeners!

I realize I’ve posted a few times about Overkill lately, but really, they’re just such a worthy band of any praise that can be thrown their way. I posted earlier in this thread a song from the new album that just came out this month. I listened to the new album twice, and wow does this band sound different now from their 1980’s phase. I prefer the older days, but the new album still kicks ass.
A nice pick of their older days that I love:

Critical Defiance: With surprise thrash attacks this good, it’s really never a bad time to be a thrash metal fan. I just finished listening to this album and have begun more listens. Critical Defiance are from Chile, and now signed to Unspeakable Axe Records, a testament to their effectiveness as a band. These guys fill their songs with great riffs, the most notable feature of the album. Sometimes extremely fast, and every now and then they slow it down a little. Some may complain about the vocalist, but I like him, and I like that he doesn’t sound just like everyone else. The guitarists are also members of traditional heavy metal bands and it is an obvious influence on their sound sometimes, such as the dual guitar leads in the middle of this song before the slow melodic bit.

Evildead: This Los Angeles-based band rules. This album is old, sure, but the sound doesn’t really tell you that. Here’s one of my favorite tracks off their popular album Annihilation of Civilization. The first time I heard this album I actually did not like it because I felt it was a bit in its crossover leanings and I hated anything that had a punky edge to it, but now going back I see that this is a masterpiece thrash album.

Harter Attack: Not a new band discovery for me, but definitely one of my favorites. In my opinion, this is one of the most overlooked hidden gems out there in thrash metal. They marry the punk-fueled attitude of the East Coast thrash scene with the speed and energy of the Bay Area thrash scene, and they created something awesome. This album is intense, and its political messages are delivered through very harsh criticisms. Imagine if Slayer’s Reign in Blood album had a pinch more punk/hardcore spice in it and focused its lyrics on corruption in politics.

Vulture: Okay, technically this is a Speed Metal band, not thrash, but we don’t have a speed metal thread, and I’m not going to make one. Speed metal nicely evolved into thrash as far as I’m concerned, so it belongs here. This band’s got a lot going for them. Excellent riffs, drums sound live and badass, and the songs on the new album are just so diverse that it makes this a really great listen. A lot of you will complain about the vocals. I can’t fix that, but I think it’s perfect. The vocalist sounds like a lunatic, and that’s what I love about the vocals.

If you ask me, 2019 has been a very disappointing year for Thrash Metal releases, hence why I’ve abandoned this thread for most of the year. However, I’ve found a small number of goodies I’ll share over time.
Sadistic Ritual: When Unspeakable Axe picks up a band, they’re usually pretty extreme, which is how I like my thrash metal. These guys go hard, with sharp riffs, high speeds, and coarse vocals. I’m quite fond of this release.

Excuse: These Finnish thrash metal dudes have been around for about four or five years. In my mind, this is their most proper release yet. What’s on offer here is some very sincere, honest, rough around the edges, old-school thrash with a touch of 80’s speed metal influences rounding out their sound. Vocals are ugly in a Cronos-era Venom kind of way, which I love. The recording not being super pristine and clear really makes this feel awesome, like a live show sound, but a really good, not shitty one. I am falling in love with this album fast. Check this gem out, in a year where thrash metal isn’t doing so well.

Warbringer: Okay, this is going to get wordy. I have not listened to a thrash metal band and felt these sensations in what feels like forever. This album is a beast. The vocals are razor sharp, bass is present and often pretty outstanding, guitar work is phenomenal, drumming is fast and varied, and the songwriting is incredible. Warbringer never sucked, but I never expected that they would be at the top of a list of current favorites of any year. This currently is the album I most want to hear at any given moment. I'd give it a perfect score right now if I was reviewing it for metalcrypt or metal-archives. "Firepower Kills" is incredibly hooky and memorable, as is track 2, "Crushed Beneath the Tracks" is super heavy and evokes that Demolition Hammer feel from the start in crushing fashion. "Defiance of Fate" is my personal favorite and is practically a black metal song, with incredible vocal mixing and well placed drumming and everything. "Heart of Darkness" is another black metally number also a highlight of the record for me. The last four tracks are classic brutal thrash metal fare. I have never felt this before, but I was blasting the album while cooking dinner earlier today, and I just felt something really take over me, as this album is just so powerful, its aura launches me into some weird metalhead spiritual journey. I physically cannot control myself when I hear this album! I can't recommend it enough. Choosing a track to post here in this thread is difficult because you want to represent the album well with a video you post, but with each song being so unique and every single one being a banger, I want to pick something that represents what you get most when you hear it. So I picked "Outer Reaches," one of the last three songs. Is it the best song on the album, no. It lacks the anthemic brutality of some of the bigger numbers, as well as the hooks of early standouts. No black metal in this track either. But it shows that Warbringer are a very serious and competent band who deserve your ears and your money!

Slaughter Messiah: Fans of a wide variety of metal like myself and probably Blacksalt among others generally have become aware that Black/thrash has become incredibly trendy in recent years. Almost to the point that there is too much a surplus to keep up with them all. I generally categorize this hybrid of styles into two camps: there’s the old school version that goes for a more punky, primitive sound that can be traced back to goals of sounding like Venom (Midnight probably the most popular band in that camp at the moment) and then there is the more aggressive, more brutal approach taken by bands like Urn, Condor, and my personal favorite, Infant Death (shitty name, badass songs). This band fits more into this category of black/thrash. Midnight might be the most popular face of Black/thrash today, but this album would kick Midnight’s teeth down their throats. I’m a big fan of this album and I’ve knly spun it twice. Not sure it will hit my end of year list since Black/thrash and I are somewhat less a match than in 2018, but I still highly recommend anyone to check out this current year release. Excellent metal of quality here.
