It’s been a hot minute since I last felt moved by a death metal band enough to post here, but I’ve got some stuff I’ve also been neglecting to post. Here’s one.
Inoculation: Here is their two-track EP, a painless 8 minutes that you’ll likely find something worthwhile while listening. One thing I really dig about this band is that they are a modern sounding death metal band, but somehow I also get this scrappy old school Deicide feeling when I listen to it, without it sounding like Deicide. So basically, it’s kinda hard for me to describe too well what this sounds like, but I can definitely highly recommend this as death metal worthy of repeat listens.

I haven’t been wowed by death metal releases in a long time, which is sad for a big death metal fan like myself. It’s all just too safe or too familiar, nothing brave or just outstandingly good lately. It’s already middle of February and nothing to show for it. Anybody on here heard any good death metal to share recently? Especially I’m always on the lookout for good death metal from the current year.

The only “new” death metal I heard lately was that Creeping Death LP that I was asking you about; I thought it was good, but nothing jumped out and caught my attention...
Been looking around for something to catch my eye.

Been looking around for something to catch my eye. Yeah, it’s okay. I’m just a struggling death metal fan. Feel like I’m losing touch with the subgenre, as I’m constantly finding bangers in the modern traditional heavy metal and doom metal scenes and finding nothing deathy to listen to. I’ll probably begin a one or two year phase of bands with mostly clean vocals and then bounce back to a solid death metal phase after that.

The Crown (Formerly Crown of Thorns, such as in this video): Guys, melodic death metal was one of the easiest sub genres for me to become attached to in my early metal days. The Crown were a band I missed out on by the time I grew to hate melodic death metal. I hate melodic death metal because the vast majority is so...sterile, for lack of better words. It all just sounds too clean and safe to my ears. But I’m visiting much of The Crown’s early albums, especially because their most recent album kicked ass. What brings me to share this is that this is melodic death metal unlike the masses. This shit doesn’t lose any intensity, and I especially love the ferocious energy from the drummer who blasts through these songs sometimes as if he thinks he’s playing for Deicide! Hahaha! Check out this super short track from their last album before being forced to change their name to The Crown. Mind you, this is one of the less melodic tracks, but damn is it an ass stomper! Most of their several albums totally rip!

Apep- Finally, something death metal I’m hyped on. German band, playing like early Nile, which I think is pretty cool. Not very polished production, and while I normally prefer that, they would benefit from a touch of cleaning. Nevertheless, this is excellent. Sounds a lot like Nile, with an obviously lesser drummer (because Nile’s drummer is a top 3 in death metal badass of a drummer), and this is what I needed. Album art is also ace!

Druid Lord: Do you guys like Death/Doom? Generally I don't, because many death/doom bands fail to go into interesting territory with it, often failing to expand the songwriting beyond the guidelines of slow and heavy. Druid Lord did a fantastic job with their latest album in making dynamic doom/death that sounds sooooooo heavy and good. Please, check this out with headphones or at least great speakers. The songwriting is the highlight of this band's efforts to be relevant to this subgenre. If you get a few minutes in and your head isn't flailing, you might wanna check your pulse, because you might already be dead.
Oh, and don't go digging up their first full-length. I heard it before, and it wasn't as good. This album? Front to back, it's fantastic.
Edit: At 3:58, the change of pace here is just so fucking brutal, I am air drumming and destroying my work desk. Glad there aren't kids on campus today. hahaha

Ulcerate: This band has often been labeled as unorthodox technical death metal. I'd also like to throw in the word "atmospheric" as a descriptor, personally, as someone who has been off and on familiar with the band's releases. They have just released their newest and 6th album. Here's the title track, which has a badass name. I'm halfway into the album, and loving the approach they took this time around. It feels less complicated, but the drumming is a major highlight here with its unique frantically busy and interesting patterns and fills. Guitar work is more supporting an atmospheric atmosphere, but also giving way to more in the way of riffs and leads, which makes this feel like a unique record for the band. Vocals are god-status level death metal growls, in my opinion. I love this guy's vocals. There's an emotional and epic quality to these songs, which I cannot say about previous albums. If you like the quality of many post-metal bands, you might find this appealing. These songs still don't seem to have much of a traditional sense of form, which is totally okay to me. I do hope you guys will check out this very deserving band.

Thanatos: this band’s new release has been waiting for me to listen to it. Finally got around to it. This is killer death/thrash from one of the most consistent and long-running bands doing it. From the Netherlands, they have been a band since 1984, granted under a different name back then. If you like death metal with a thrash riff and drum base, this band does it really well. I also love when they slow things down. There are a couple of big shots in this band in my eyes, as vocalist/guitarist played guitars in the Bolt Thrower tribute and supergroup band Hail of Bullets along side the legendary Martin van Drunen. Also there is a veteran member of Asphyx on this record too. These guys know what they’re doing. Give it a listen.

Raider: Unlearner, have you heard this madness yet? Holy damn, this is looking like an album I’ll need to be listening to a lot this year. Death/thrash, at times much in the vein of Demolition Hammer. What more do I need to say? I started listening to this track, and at 2:00 was just like “alright.” But then a minute later and I was shitting myself. Hahaha
