Cosmic Putrefaction: Finally, more good death metal from 2019. This is a one-man band project from Italy. I saw a few youtube videos of songs from this album, and one of the few comments out there compared them to Morbid Angel. ...Umm...I don’t know about that, but I will say that while their sound isn’t original, it’s difficult for me to compare the music to any one band. There are elements of Morbid Angel, but to say they sound like them is a stretch. Well, in any case, listen to it if you’re interested in some solid death metal.

Vader: This long-running band have always intrigued me, especially with their easily recognizable vocalist whose tone I really like, as well as with their generally excellent and stable writing sense. However, as much as I appreciate the band, I never fell deeply in love with them. This year they relelased a very short EP of five songs in only 13 minutes. I believe this is truly the best way to experience Vader. It is short, to the point, and with this it is not overwhelming at all. The band is very tight especially with this current lineup and notably this drummer. Great songs here. I’m posting the whole EP here. By the way, it’s the only release I’ve picked up and listened to three times in a row without a break between. It was that good for me.

Who knows this band? Covenance - Ravaging the Pristine This rips so much, what goes on at 7:04 on this disk makes me want to smash my closet to pieces ...

Damn. Believe it or not, I actually didn’t know this band. I love an old school deathgrind release like this. I did some research on the band, they had a really stellar lineup, with a couple of Dying Fetus members, a dude from Misery Index, and even a dude in Phil Anselmo’s recent band. That’s badass. I especially liked the drumming here, even with its cheap, sloppy, and scrappy sound. Can’t beat that authenticity. Thanks for sharing that one!

The cover art pulled me in alone on this one. Found this a while back but only listened to one song and put it on a list of things to get when I’m able to return to my computer. Band is from New Mexico! Don’t know many bands from there I’m into, but this one is badass.

Here’s my first of probably many brutal death posts of the year.
Disentomb: This may be one of the most anticipated releases of brutal death/slamming brutal death metal for 2019. I didn’t hear of them until quite recently by accident, but it turns out that they are a really solid band with some incredibly loyal followers waiting since their last album, which was a real stunner. Expect to hear some technical riffs and rhythms, not incredibly monotonous like we tend to expect from BDM bands. Oh, and these dudes do that slam stuff, so if deathcore is your thing, this isn’t far from that neighborhood. I think their slams are far more interesting than the typical deathcore breakdown. I really appreciate that they go guttural and all without sounding like garbage. Give it a try!

One more for brutal death today.
Visceral Disgorge: From Baltimore, these guys are bringing a lot of diverse songwriting into the category. Special attention should be put on those drums, as Billy Denne is a phenomenal drummer, capable of the fastest and most badass fills, transitions, and grooves. This band also slams, like Disentomb, for those who wonder if they’ll ever slow things down. This track is a great indication that the upcoming album out soon this month will slay.

Alright, finishing off my list of brutal death metal recommendations. I’ve filtered through several bands, and can assure that, at least within a death metal/extreme metal fan’s tastebuds, none of these I’m posting sound like shit. That is a particularly important distinguishment, as many of these types of bands actually sound like shit.
Consumed by Vultures: Although Disentomb might be the most talked about in the BDM scene at the moment, I think Consumed by Vultures sound superior than all other BDM acts on many levels this year. Those vocals are incredible, and surprisingly clear. Almost don’t need a lyrics sheet. So many tempo shifts in such a short duration ensure that there are plenty of varied riffs and grooves to dig into. A really great album that is more likely to reach my top 10 this year than any other BDM album so far. Oh, and they’re also quite melodic for those of you who like death metal with a melodic edge.
Corpseflesh: I honestly expected this to suck when I saw the album art and album title. Boy was I wrong. This is some edgy, violent shit. But their musicianship is undeniable. The second half of this song is fucking nuts! Another BDM album in which the vocalist is quite easy to understand. Weird, but awesome. The sound is kinda chunky, much like that of the famous album by Skinless, Trample the Weak...etc.
Disowning: These guys are an international band of Canadians and French musicians, so you can imagine there is something unique with this one. This falls under the Technical Brutal Death Metal category. The sound engineering is amazing, so this sounds super clean...you can hear everything, and it allows the music intricacies to shine and flow. And that’s good, because this is very accessible BDM. In fact, this is what you show your grandma when you want her to get into BDM. But that doesn’t mean it sucks. If you don’t generally like BDM, start here. Oh, and vocals are indecipherable by listening.
Demiurgon: This one just sounds fucking massive. I also appreciate short and sweet when it comes to extreme metal such as this. Vocals are sometimes understandable, but often not. Wow, their drummer is incredible. Whenever he leaves the band, they’ve got massive Converse All-Stars to fill for the position! He blasts and skanks at hyper speeds like nobody’s business. Also, I think BDM sounds best with atonal, Slayer inspired guitar solos. This band has that going on. A lot of BDM bands today do melodic sweeping solos, and it feels out of place in my opinion.
Carnal Abhorrence: This will likely be the most polarizing band on the list I’ve compiled here. I also felt uneasy knowing that they programmed drums. I hope they get a real drummer in their soon though, because this band has great potential. The vocals may ruin this for those of you checking these out. He is closest to “burp metal” than most vocalists I can accept. The music saves it if you allow it to show you. They have tight musicianship, shown by the tight and technical, yet brief guitar flourishes. They really know how to crush with some breakdowns too.
Cercenated Flesh: A top comment on youtube called this album “Tomb of the Mutilated Pt. 2.” If you’re down with Cannibal Corpse’s famous album, that comment really isn’t a bad comparison to this album. This sounds like an updated version, at least. And just like CC’s album, there is a dominant shitty-ness in the sound of this record, mostly found in the drums. But it is shitty-good, not shitty-bad. Sometimes it just gives an album a fun character, at least that’s how I feel. Not top-notch, and probably the most forgettable band on this list, but I still enjoy them.
