I forgot all about this gem of a movie. There was a period of time after Human Centipede came out where I kept inviting my friends over, getting them fucked up, and then putting on the most fucked up horror movies I could find.

First time I've heard it described as a gem... There was definitely a trend for shock value horror films a few years ago. I think Martyrs (the original French film) was probably the one which got me the most. It was genuinely well made from what I remember too.

Not sure if this is considered a horror or a thriller but The Wailing was really good.

Not sure if this is considered a horror or a thriller but The Wailing was really good. I’d think it’s more horror than thriller, and fuck yes, that was a really good movie. Still has a 99% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Has anyone seen Hereditary? Heard nothing but good things.
Just recently rewatched The Fly 1986 with Goldblum, classic body horror.

I actually collect horror now. I’ve mostly been into body horror for a while, but I have some other shit like all of Lucio Fulci’s gates of Hell trilogy and Dario Argento’s Demons. Mostly into old school stuff for the practical effects and the atmosphere, and sometimes just how silly it can be, like John Carpenter’s The Fog is about ghost pirates but it’s still a 10/10 horror movie. Also obsessed with Phantasm cause who doesn’t love evil wizards lol.

I've always liked how believable the first two Scream movies are. I don't know if Maximum Overdrive counts as a horror movie, but it's always been one of my favorites regardless of how terrible it is.

I recently watched the Suspiria remake and I consider it to be one of the best horror films ever. It ranks up there on my personal list fighting with Beyond the Black Rainbow for the number 1 spot. It has some deeply unsettling imagery, a ritualistic ending that goes far beyond what Hereditary offered, and all the makings of a great horror film, but then goes beyond. It completely transcends the horror genre by injecting a complex undercurrent of post-war Germany and the mindset of a people coming to grips with their involvement in the Holocaust. It prominently addresses feminism, abuse of power, & collective guilt. Add to that the stunning choreography and the fact Tilda Swinton plays 3 different characters, it is an utter power-house of a horror film the likes of which rank it among the best, most complex films I've ever seen.
If you are a thinker and like complex films, this is a MUST SEE. You can appreciate it for the horror elements, then dive deep into the intricate historical details. I went into it having not seen the original and was completely blown away, having to watch it twice to fully realize it's greatness. Despite being 2 and a half hours, the ending alone is so mindblowing, it makes Hereditary look like PG13 horror.

For me, it could've been truly great but the way the plot panned out left me feeling pretty hollow. I get what you mean about it having more depth than Hereditary, but I just found Hereditary to be a more satisfying film from a horror point of view. I need to check out this Beyond the Black Rainbow that you speak of.
