Who is that one band that you kept seeing stuff about but you never really took the chance to listen to, but when you finally did you were like "Oh shit"
For me it was
Trail of Lies - I kept seeing a lot of stuff when they had first came out and kept meaning to check them out, but I would always forget until one of my friends turned them on for me
Eyes of the Lord - I saw the hype when their "Call It War" dropped but it took me until November to finally give them a listen.
Momentum - I saw kept seeing their names pop up for fests and big shows, but I never really cared to check them out cause I didn't see it pop up that often. Then I talked to one of the dudes in Vatican who said they were awesome, so I got their album. But I didn't actually listen to it until this year.

I know there are plenty of bands that I have slept on, but the one that sticks out the most for me is Foundation. I had seen people wearing their merch for years, and people would always talk them up as to how great they were. I didn't start listening to them until they were about to break up. I was a little upset that I had many opportunities to see them live, but did not actually go.

This is a really tough question, I mean there are a lot of bands that I’ve heard and was immediately turned off of and then came back to later to realize they were actually pretty decent.
I’d have to say the biggest one was probably Napalm Death. I heard ‘Fear, Emptiness & Dispair’ in high school and it wasn’t my jam at all and nearly a decade later came back to ‘Scum’ and was blown away.

Korn, Tool and Deftones are probably the most well known bands that come immediately to my mind when thinking about this. There was nothing purposeful about it, I just never had an interest in listening to them until I started aurally exhausting myself with modern mainstream rock and alternative rock, and I began venturing into harder and heavier territory.

Good idea for a thread.
Honestly this happens to me all the time. I have so many hundreds of albums, and i listen to basically anything heavy that i think takes talent, that i discover a dozen new bands every month. Probably more. And sometimes it's just through a post here, or on another music site, where i'm like "well, okay, let's listen to this band now..."
So, that's happened with these groups (and i'm missing more i'm sure)..
Code Orange (i'm very hit or miss on hardcore bands) Agoraphobic Nosebleed (i was turned off like 15 years ago by the "fake drums" thing but i got into them years later and love them now) Cattle Decapitation (dunno, something turned me on to them after ignoring them for like a decade) Fit for an Autopsy (thought they were one of those clone deathcore bands no better than random garbage on Bandcamp, i was wrong) Loma Prieta (assumed it was pretentious generic screamo, i was wrong) Metallica (ha, yes i know, insane, but sort of... i knew their popular early songs of course but was always like "well, good i guess" and just got into the new music since i was now old enough to like it, and within the past 2 years i got their old records and realized they are fucking masterpieces) Tool (again, just never gave them a chance, thought it was some bizarre fanboy worship not worth the hype, turns out they're basically gods) Salt the Wound (see the answer for Fit for an Autopsy) Raein (see the answer for Loma Prieta) Punch (see the answer for Code Orange)
This happens all the time to me. As i grow older, i find i like more and more music, from bands i previously ignored or dismissed.
It's also true about almost the entire jazz genre, at least the classic form. After buying huge sets of Miles Davis and Dave Brubeck albums, i'm looking for more.

Most recent is Northlane. I always threw them off as some djent band and never really listened to them. After getting into IA last year, I decided to give Northlane a chance then hated myself for never listening lol. New Northlane is alright, but their first 2 albums are just fucking amazing. Adrian was a nice vocalist.

The Contortionist, or at least their last two albums. I was really turned off by Intrinsic because it seemed like it had a major identity crisis and I skipped Language entirely. I listened to Clairvoyant a while after it came out and it ended up being one of my favorites of 2017. Went back and listened to Language and really dug that, too.
My Ticket Home. Originally wrote them off as generic Risecore (which I guess they were), but Strangers Only is a complete banger and I really enjoy unReal.
Slipknot. I listened to Vol. 3 in middle school like any edgelord at the time, but then stopped listening to them because they're not "real metal." Eventually stopped giving a fuck about what internet neckbeards think qualifies as metal or not and am a big fan of the self-titled and Iowa. Gray Chapter was a bit of a miss, but there are some good tracks like The Negative One.

War From A Harlots Mouth - couldn't really appreciate their sound when I was younger and now I miss them.
letlive. - Jason Butlers voice always threw me off. Then last year I gave it a try and immediately got hooked on them.
Dance Gavin Dance - Always thought they were just another Rise Records band but boy was I wrong. Mothership is the bomb
Gnarwolves - Honestly don't know why I didn't like them.
Touché Amoré - Pretty much the same as Gnarwolves. After I had Stage Four for heavy rotation, I can't remember why I always dismissed them.

I usually sleep on bands, way too much. I predict the next one to be Botch.
Slept on Arkangel, Black Flag, Bob Dylan, Frank Zappa, Integrity, Misfits, Neurosis, Ringworm, Swans, The Beatles and many more.
Biggest one must be Have Heart. Everyone of my friends was hugely into them, but I never liked them. It took me a couple of years and now I can smack myself in the head for never taking any chance to see them live.

I heard a rumor that they might play a United Blood, but we will find that out at 12!

But then I finally sat down and listened to Ride the Lightning when I was 22 and I was like "Holy Shit, this is the Metallica everyone talks about." They're my favorite band to this day

I saw My Ticket Home when they released Strangers Only cause they had a tour with Stray From The Path, Counterparts and Expire. They're first two albums were pretty generic metalcore for the time so I wasn't extremely hyped for them, but my friend told me the new album was awesome and when I heard that they had more of a Nu-Metal influence I was like "Oh shit, this rules." Slipknot is the exact same story as me. I used to print out pics of them and KoRn's logos and put them in my binders cause I was a "metalhead"

Have Heart was the first hardcore band that I had gotten into but I had stopped listening to them cause this dude who was showing me all these new hardcore bands had told me that the sucked and only people who were getting into hardcore listened to them. But now they're definitely one of my favorite bands from that wave of hardcore. Great lyrics and really good instrumentals when you think about.
